Independent HR consultants are solo practitioners, often former HR heads or labour law specialists, who work directly with a small number of clients: setting up HR for a startup, running payroll and compliance for a factory, drafting policies, handling a disciplinary inquiry or coaching a founder on people decisions. They charge day rates, typically ₹5,000 to ₹25,000, or a monthly retainer for a fixed number of days, and can start within days without the overhead of a firm. What they cannot offer is depth of bench: if your consultant is unavailable, work waits, and large projects may need them to bring in associates.
Consultants on this page show their specialisms, rate band and reviews from the founders and managers they have worked with. Filter by service to find a labour law adviser, a fractional HR head or a trainer, and by city for in-person availability.
Day rates run ₹5,000 to ₹25,000 depending on seniority and specialism. Monthly retainers for two to four days of on-site work typically cost ₹20,000 to ₹60,000.
For a company under about 100 employees that needs experienced judgement rather than a team: policy set-up, a compliance clean-up or interim HR leadership. Larger, multi-site projects usually need a firm.
Ask for two client references in a similar business, examples of documents they have produced, and, for compliance work, evidence of recent PF, ESIC or labour department filings they have handled.
